My gear + mastery = 6 million damage?

Well

I normally play frost pvp, but for something new i went into a bg as unholy(didnt bother to reforge my gear) with a 2200 boomkin (shyfthappens) druid from my server, and we did a random bg.

I was amazed that i was pulling more damage then him. At the end he barely beat me out but we both had 6 million damage. I was stacking necrotics and ds spam. I only used festering strike to use blood runes and stacked necrotics.

I have been always told that haste/crit/mastery, and if i was serious about uh i would normally just reforge haste.

Has anyone else noticed that mastery was that effective for unholy? Is it just for the trinkets // 2her off dw that makes it viable?

*I do have 2 dragon soul trinkets + the tentecle weapon*
as unholy you still want to do haste most then crit/exp to mastery if you can't go to haste. there is a good unholy pvp guide floating around the forums i would check out. i found using bone link fetish in pvp to be pretty good extra dps when fights around the flags get heavy
I've read some theories regarding stacking Mastery for Unholy PvP. The basic theory is that since you generally don't have 100% up-time on your target the way you do in PvE single-target fights, Haste isn't quite as beneficial in PvP. Mastery, on the other hand, provides a consistent increase to your Shadow damage, benefiting you every time you use a Shadow damage-based attack. Since Death Coil is generally one of our top 3 sources of damage (frequently it's #1), Mastery provides a nice, consistent boost to our overall damage. Unfortunately, another big source of Shadow damage for UH DKs is the Shadow damage-portion of our Scourge Strikes. Since Necrotic Strike generally takes the place of Scourge Strike in PvP, this reduces the benefit that we get from Mastery in PvP. Regardless, Haste is still considered the king of secondary stats for UH in both PvP and PvE.

On the other hand, I would be very interested to see the results of some experimental PvP builds that go in a different direction from the standard Haste build. Perhaps gemming for Resilience so that you could get away with using some PvE gear for the 2 or 4pc tier set bonuses and then stacking Mastery? Who knows......it will be very interesting to see if the changes brought by MoP will actually foster more diversity and creativity as far as spec builds go.
